Welcome to The Unwritten Syllabus!
Welcome to The Unwritten Syllabus! My name is Alex and I'm a newly single 20-something learning how to balance my work as a teacher with my relationships, hobbies, and personal development goals. Since graduating from Boston University in 2020, I have been struck by just how "unwritten" life feels without the structure of being a full-time student. There's no clear syllabus or rules for the next steps - it's all up to me (seems obvious, right?!). I have a vague sense of what I might want to do next, but I want to take a more active role in structuring my life to align with my values and goals.

This fall, I'll be enrolling in the Ed.D. program at Johns Hopkins, which has been a goal of mine since finishing my undergrad. I'll be researching adolescent literacy in the digital age, and I'm hoping to find answers to some of the questions and problems that have arisen from my classroom experience. I am passionate about this topic, but I can't help but worry that I have neglected my personal life in favor of developing my "teacher identity."
As I approach my 30's, I want to strike a balance between my educator identity and my personal goals. I am making a huge transition right now, moving from New Hampshire back to my hometown, Baltimore, Maryland following the end of my 5-year relationship. I want to be intentional and thoughtful about what's next for me. I will be using this blog as a space to explore my interests both professionally and personally. I plan to write about topics like the state of education, young adulthood, dating, friendships, family, and my personal interests like reality TV and crafting. Thank you for stopping by - I hope you find something that resonates with you!
